Why Overachievers Burn Out and How to Break the Cycle
We’ve been taught that hard work pays off. That success comes from pushing harder, staying later, and doing more than everyone else. But what happens when all that effort leads to exhaustion instead of achievement? What happens when burnout hits, and you realize you’ve been pouring from an empty cup?
In my latest KimUnity Soulutions Podcast episode, I sat down with the incredible Faye McCray, former health attorney, media executive, writer, and self-care advocate, to talk about why overachievers burn out and, more importantly, how to break free from the cycle.
This conversation hit deep, because many of us are taught to say yes to every opportunity, fix every problem, and carry the weight of entire organizations on our backs. At the expense of what? Our health? Our families? Our sense of self?
So, how do we stop burning out and start reclaiming our time, energy, and well-being?
1️⃣ Empower Your “No”
Faye spoke powerfully about learning to say no without guilt. Too often, we agree to things out of obligation, fear, or people-pleasing tendencies.
2️⃣ Work Is a Transaction—Not Your Identity
Faye reminds us that our worth is not tied to our job title.
3️⃣ Protect Your Mental and Physical Health
🚨 Burnout isn’t just mental—it’s physical. 🚨
For Faye, the wake-up call came when she landed in the hospital needing an iron infusion. And yet, she still felt the need to log into work from the hospital bed.
Soulution:
The truth is: overachievers don’t burn out because they’re weak, they burn out because they care. But caring about your work shouldn’t mean sacrificing yourself in the process.
